Maintenance & Mulching
Spring and fall cleanups, mulching, and seasonal property maintenance.
About This Service
Consistent seasonal maintenance is the foundation of any beautiful Cape Cod landscape, and Sofkin Landscaping provides the full range of services to keep your property looking pristine every month of the year.
Spring cleanup is one of the most critical services of the year. After Cape Cod winters — which bring salt spray, freeze-thaw cycles, and heavy leaf litter — most properties need a thorough reset. We clear accumulated winter debris from lawns and beds, rake out matted dead grass to prevent fungal disease, cut back perennials and ornamental grasses, edge all garden bed borders, and apply the season's first mulch layer to insulate soil, lock in moisture, and suppress early weed germination.
Our mulching service uses premium double-shredded hardwood or natural cedar mulch, applied at the proper 2–3 inch depth. We are careful never to over-mulch or volcano-mulch around tree and shrub bases — a common mistake that creates rot and pest habitat. Properly applied mulch dramatically reduces bed weeding through the season and keeps your landscape looking polished and finished.
Throughout the growing season we handle ongoing bed weeding, deadheading of spent flowers, shrub shearing, and general garden tidying on whatever schedule keeps your property at its best. Fall cleanup — complete leaf removal, final low mow to prevent snow mold, perennial cutback, and winter protection for sensitive plantings — rounds out the annual cycle. Our clients treat seasonal maintenance as an investment that protects every dollar spent on plantings, lawn renovation, and landscape improvements.

Frequently Asked Questions
When do you typically do spring cleanups on Cape Cod?
Spring cleanups begin as soon as the ground thaws and overnight temperatures stay above freezing — typically late March through April on Cape Cod. We schedule by zone and book up quickly, so we recommend getting on our calendar by February.
What kind of mulch do you use and how much do I need?
We use premium double-shredded hardwood mulch as our standard, with cedar mulch available for areas where insect deterrence matters. A 2–3 inch layer is ideal — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without suffocating plants. We calculate exact quantities for your beds and source everything.
How often do garden beds need to be weeded?
With fresh mulch applied at the proper depth, beds typically need weeding every 3–4 weeks through the growing season. Without mulch, or in beds with persistent weeds, monthly visits may not be enough. We include weeding in our seasonal maintenance packages.
Do you handle fall leaf removal?
Yes — fall cleanup is one of our most popular services. We handle complete leaf removal from lawns and beds, final mowing at a reduced height to prevent snow mold, cutting back perennials, and protecting sensitive plantings for Cape Cod winters.
